broken down!

Post by dougt25 »

hi all, I am currently in a campsite in crowboroug, nr tumbridge wells with wife and baby The van has been cutting out while idling late and today it stalled at the traffic lights restarted but then cut out when running2 mins later now wont start at all.
it has fuel but the fuel filter seems to be dry. I tried putting the inlet pipe to the fuel pump into a can of fuel but it still wont start. Do the fuel pumps go on these vans often? It a watercooled 1.9.
it drove us all the wayvfrom cornwsll and broke down at the campsite! Here
suposef to be going to france on tues!
any help on how to test or what it could be would be appreciated. Are the fuel pumps ok to change?
thanks
doug

Ok, if you take off the fuel inlet to the carb and after disconnecting the coil put it in a can.....do you get petrol? If so then more likely to bevignition system. If it might be fuel pump they are cheap and very easy to fit, u will need pump and gasket, some good quality pumps have the inlet/outlet pointing in the right direction, others less so. VW heritage is dear but near to you and prob does next day delivery. Otherwise I would change the fuel filter in any case.

If it's a DG they can also get clogged up carbs. There s a tiny inlet filter into the carb but I'd check other things first. Obviously if you have fuel then check all electrical connections to coil, ht leads etc. Check distributor cap/ rotor are seated properly and ok.

thanks all
new pump bought yesterday from john bowles ,in tumbridge wells. Were up and running, off to france today.

fitted new fuel lines while I was at it all in the campsite..
I did notice that I have a cracked expansion tank under front arches, whats the implications of bypassing by just looping a hose between the two inlet pipes? Funny design eh?

thanks doug

Petrol expansion tanks, one each side under the front wheel arches. Nicely placed so salty crap sits on top and rots out the seatbelt mounting points.
