lazy fuel guage

hi all im slowly going through the list of things that need fixing on my t25 next on the list is the fuel guage at times it reads just above the red line the next minute reads empty and so on and on ! is there a float in the tank? ive only had it a few days and im wondering if i fill it right up will this free it up ?

Filling it right up will tell you if you have a leaky tank - its how I found out Design of tank means they're prone to rusting out on top.

My gauge is empty/half full depending on whether going round corners or up & down hill. Never stressed too much about it tbh but then again I'm a lazy git

Aye we've also found the gauge to be 'vague', however I'm suspecting we have a poor earth connection somewhere as the temp gauge can go 'vague' at the same time!

mine moves about and takes a while to settle down,I think most of them are like that

Firstly they are a slow moving gauge. Secondly they are influenced by the angle your van is. If you are travelling down hill it looks like you have a lot more fuel than when you're travelling up hill - as long as it's a long hill because the gauge is so slow (see 'firstly' above). It can't be fixed because it ain't broke

As my reassuring friend 1664 states, you can't do much except live with them. If on average, its showing 1/4 tank, its generally time to top up. I tend to run around with 1/2 tank these days unless its a big run.

My gauge was being lazy too, reading just above half when tank full to the brim.

Aidan from here advised me to inspect the sensor connector on the tank under the driver side rear arch(LHD). He advised to be very very careful with the two pin connector though, as if it broke, its new sensor time. I carefully unplugged it, gave it a clean with electrical contact cleaner, and now my gauge is working as it should

Slow gauge + shallow, wide tank + sensor positioned near one of the corners = they all do that sir.

When I spent a year doing 75 miles a day in our old Caravelle, I was 'tuned in' enough to run it right down till the needle was on the stop, and fill up just in time (although I was also in the habit of carrying two gallons of fuel in a can under the back seat as backup ).

After five years away from T25's, and only driving it once or twice a week, I'm not quite prepared to run the Doka that far down
