So, I think my head gasket is on the way out. To help me prepare for the inevitable, anyone here had one done/done it themselves?
How expensive/difficult was it?

I did the head gasket on my AAZ its more or less the same as the JX as far as changing I guess. To be honest it wasnt that hard to do and my machanical skills are quite basic really. I didnt have or have come to think of it seen a Bentley or Haynes manual but muddled through it with some advice from mates. You just have to be really methodical and the parts to do it with a GSF trade card was about £70 so not the end of the world really if you have a weekend to do it. I did mine outside on my drive in January.

Hi Horns
Feel free to drop round to Wood Green this weekend and have a look at my old 1Z engine which is currently in bits after the crank pulley nut came loose and broke. Aiming to swap another engine from a golf in this weekend but took the old one apart last week bit by bit so I could remove the block myself without needing a crane.
I've not changed the head on one of these diesels but have on various other petrol cars in the past. You'll need some tools like torque wrench, cam belt timing tools, possibly pulley remover. If it is like the 1Z may be best to leave manifolds and turbo attached to head when you pull it and then you don't have to worry about loosening poorly accessible rusty fasteners or renewing these gaskets. That worked best for me but I did have advantage that I had replaced the turbo to manifold bolts only last year and knew that they should undo easily. For lining up the gasket and the head it is a good idea to use a couple of old head bolts with the top cut off and a slot cut in so you can get them out again. I have some handy if you want any. May be worth asking or checking if you need to remove the injection pump from the block first. I did with mine but I was dismantling whole engine not just removing the head.
