HELI COIL

Post by docwalker99 »

Hi there I need some advice I have broke the two bolts that hold the brake caliper on my 1981 1600 Aircooled The bolt sizes are 1.5 x 37 and 1.5 x 34 what size helicoil do I need to order off of ebay as I have tried drilling to the edge of the bolts thread and getting it out tried heating them and they still won't budge so I thought just buy a helicoil drill the lot out and fit said coil.

doing this my self unless anyone can offer me any better advice as need to do this at the weekend!!!!

Hello

DON'T DO IT

Sorry, but you will need a s/hand caliper.

Or a pair of new.

Cordialement,

Thanks its the point wher the caliper mounts to not the actual caliper its the cast iron bit on the steering knucle where the two bolts screw into the caliper is fine, other option is to drill the thread and put a longer bolt with a nut on it

If you can't afford another steering knuckle, take off the one you have and get it to someone suitably equipped to remove the broken parts.

I very much doubt any method other than drilling out the remains will now be possible, as they were tight/corroded enough to snap 10mm of original bolt, (and easy outs - but they're rubbish and always break), I'll be very surprised if anything other than removal of the material will assist.

Don't try to drill them out on the van, the knuckle will be damaged.
