Going to have a look at this Syncro - anyone know it?

Post by irishkeet »

Hello

I have been chatting with the owner and I'm planning to go and look at this syncro
http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-moto ... n/86248200

I really want a Westy but this looks good with FSH. I was wondering if anyone knows this van?

many thanks

That exhaust looks abit low Keith, make sure it still has the engine bash plate on and the syncro exhaust bends that go round the bash plate. look on the inside of the rear wheel arch too where the rear jacking point is to look for holes round there to as it looks abit effected in that area on the outside.

Looks a bit odd at the back? Sort of on the p!ss and very low
It's a nice looking conversion though.

^WHS. Low exhaust with 2WD setup tailpipe on too.

Make sure it's a proper Syncro and if it's a 2wd conversion try and note which parts are correct.

Also noticed that the spare is different to the rest of the wheels. This would mean that you can't do the rotation that is recommended for all Syncros. I had the same problem when I bought mine with unusual rims and have only just sorted it. Beware running that spare for any length of time as it will b$%%&r up the 4WD. Just seen it is four stud - unless that is just some kind of hub cap - hard to tell from the pics. :?

It does look unusual though. Mine was sold to me as a Westy but with the help of Jed and others I worked out that it was originally a Caravelle. Worth checking the VIN and then go on Brickwerks for a link that will tell you when and where it was built.

I'm still quite new to Syncro's, having recently purchased my own following the very helpful advice, and help from campervanculture.com. As already said, that exhaust looks nothing like mine, and I have the Caravelle C Syncro 1992. Looks far too low.

Also the alloy wheel on the back being 4 stud is a bit odd. Maybe ask the seller if the hubs have been changed?

It does look a nice conversion though I give you that. Nice colour too.

On the plus side it is RHD,
and anyway, if its not on the "how many left" list, why not?

No harm in looking, more you look more you know,
even if its what you dont want,
or what to look for next,
and make an offer of what you would pay.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
If you do like it and the price comes to your region,
get a hands on second opinion from a syncro owner.

Good luck.

Thinking about it, those wheels look like late Beetle wide steels. I know, I have some on ours.

If that were the case they would indeed be 4 stud. Perhaps they have used PCD adapters?

I know its on Gumtree and its more often than not abit

Image

But does anyone else get the feeling something is abit fishy? Its probably just me but the in the pictures the trees dont have any leaves on them, when I zoomed in on the buildings in the back ground they dont look british looking and the road looks abit european built. Its just because its on Gumtree really but it does look a nice van from the pictures. If anyone does deal with it and there is any mention of the owner being in the army and posted in Germany at the moment just put the phone down/delete any emails and walk away before Western Union is mentioned.

Actually I revise my diagnosis. If thats a van wheel mounted with the face to the wheel carrier then it must be a 14" universal plastic wheeltrim, with a 4 stud-a-like pattern :D

Looks like a nice van, just not a very syncro friendly conversion, probably confirmed by the fact it,s not known on here.
