service advice, dist cap,leads etc

Post by vanderer »

Hi all
Ive just ordered a battery from Europarts and they are offering 25% off some things this weekend so i thought i would order some other parts.
Other than changing the plugs and topping up the fluids i've never done a service on any vehicle before so i could do with a bit of advice before i order the parts.
Ive had a look through wiki , haynes etc but i'm still struggling with a few bits
Ive got a 1990 1.9 DG petrol (at least is says DG on the sticker under the dash)
I want to get a new distributor cap , rotor arm and leads , plugs etc.

I think the plugs suggested in wiki are bosch W7 DTC.

The dist cap hasnt got a number on it that i can see, any recommendations ?

The rotor arm has number bosch 1234 332 --303 5400. Europarts site say this wont fit my van. It looks similar to the 4500rpm cut out one on Just Kampers, but its not exactly the same and JK say its for models upto 1984 only . Will this still fit or can i just get the regular one ?

Any recommendations on the leads ?

The air filter is the one with the oval housing and the circular filter. Like the idiot that i am i undid the two hoses on top of the housing and have forgotten which way round they go. They are about 2 or 3 mm, one comes from the back of the carb (i think) and the other comes out of the os body of the van. There are two nipples for them on top of the housing, one above the other. I think the hose from the carb went to the top nipple but i'm not certain. ive no idea what they are for (vacuum hoses ?) so any advice welcome before i go down the trial and error route.

There are also two cardboard/foil ? hoses about 2inches diam and a foot long which come out of the os back of the van. They dont connect to anything and i cant see anywhere that they look like they would go to. What Are these for ? Heating ?

Like i said i'm a complete novice but id like to give it a go before i resort to taking it to my local garage (PeterNorris) so be grateful for any advice.
cheers

All this is the vacuum switch for the warm air to aid the engine during warm up, it's not required in this climate and can be sealed off together with the vacuum pipes to the carb.

sort of .. They are part of the warm air ducting from the hot exhaust pipe to aide engine warm up, again not required in this country.

Other items to consider:
Antifreeze change (every two years with old fashioned blue)
Gearbox oil change (if it's never been changed it definately needs doing) must say GL4 (can say GL4/GL5) 75W90 semi is good.
Brake fluid change...DOT 4 (1 litre) every two years
Drive belt condition
Brake pads/shoes condition
Screen wash
Fuel filter
Wiper blades
Plus..lights/steering/brakes/suspension/seat belts/electrics etc etc checks

Hello,

Hand cleaner,

Paper towel roll

Bin bag.

Penetrating oil.

Big piece of cardboard to put under engine.

Work station, 2 BnQ trestles and a piece of ply,

if nothing else you can always put your tea mug on it. :rofl :rofl :rofl

Have fun,

Work safely,

If in doubt ask questions.

If it don't fit don't force it

Cordialement,

:ok
