If you mean taking out the engine heres a few tips. The engine can be taken out with a hydraulic lift from inside the van or can be removed out under the van.My method of removal is to jack up the rear as high and safely as possible. The idea being is to get a hydraulic trolly jack under the sump then to lower the engine out under the van .Undo the engine mounts whilst supporting the weight of the engine with the jack .Removing the inlet&exhaust manifold + down pipe and silencer and auxillary item like the alternater help facilitate easier removal if single handed keeps the weight down. Some remove the engine and gearbox together i dont but you need to support the gearbox by roping it up to the bulkhead when splitting the gearbox from the engine.Use some cardboard or hardboard under the jack so when the engine is lowered it can slide away from underneath.Taking off the manifolds give space to move the engine about getting it off the gearbox to lower it out of the van.Others would advice alternative methods .

could you not just remove the gearbox to get to the flywheel ?

Re: removing 16 non turbo
Well after removing the gearbox as weldore recommended still no luck, the engine is still ceased solid debunking the debris jamming the fly wheel theory.Had great fun removing the drive shaft bolts, all of them rounded of like they were made of cheese.I had to get the mig out and weld a ever so shortning allen key into the hex and cut off after removing each bolt.Luckly it did not take long to get the box off.So now where to go from here,i am thinking timing belt could of slipped maybe.Do these engines nack up in the event of piston meets valve senario?Any ideas welcome.I am going next to remove the rocker cover and loosen of the rockers to see if there is any movement on the top end.Just cant believe all this from a stater pinnion collapsing.Once again any help welcome.

hmm im just wondering if the engine locking up was what caused the end of the starter to break off.im gonna have to have a think..can you line everything up on the timing and check it before going to the rockers ?
also if its jammed solid then it still could be something behind the flywheel...have you tried taking the clutch off?

Re: removing 16 non turbo
unfortunately with the bottom pully siezed its impossible to move it to time up,also i cant see there would be anything in the clutch to hold it solid as it is now free of the gear box.I know on some engines it is poss to have the bottom bearings to move in there cups and seize is that a possibility? Also when the van was parked it was running without anysuspicious noises as i had to be towed off,it was only when it was spun over using the new starter it seized.I just hope i don't have to go down a new engine route as funds are tight. Thanks again Al.

Re: removing 16 non turbo
Well on removing the old lump today i have found out why it as locked up.On removing the inlet manifold i found the 4th inlet full of water, thus causing the cylinder to hydrolic up,ie water won't compress.I think the head gasket must of gone when it over heated, but with the high compression ratios with a diesel it had forced the water out the cylinder until i turned of the van slowly filling the cylinder when stood still.A few gaskets to order and in with the replacement lump.Cheers guy's and girls.
