Bus behaving badly, help!!
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone can help,
I was driving back from lyme regis a few weeks ago, i'd got as far as bradford on avon when my bus juddered as if it was going to run out of fuel, it only did it the once, so i just presumed it was a bit of dirt in the carb as it carried on fine, until i was just coming to stow on the wold, When this time it was doing it more violently and kept cutting out. I managed to get to a layby, where i tried starting it, but nothing. I left it for about half an hour and managed to get it going, and it got me home ( chipping norton) with no problems. Last week i was driving to weymouth in it, and it was fine until i got about 10 miles from the camp site when it did it again, just once, then it was fine. A couple of days later we were out for a drive and it started again, and this time it was cutting out and wouldnt start again, i left it for half an hour and again it fired up fine. The next day i drove home with no problems. yesterday i fitted a new coil as suggested by a friend and tonight have been out testing it, it was running fantastic until about half an hour into the journey the same thing started happening, only this time it ticks over lovely until you try to accelerate. I repeated the process, cool down half an hour, runs lovely, warms up judders, although ticks over lovely and starts fine.
Would be so grateful of some help, Mark

Re: Bus behaving badly, help!!
Whats the condition of the fuel filter? Just out of the tank is where you will or should find it. Is it full of rusty stuff?
Re: Bus behaving badly, help!!
I chased a similar issue in my old scirocco which turned out to be a carb issue. It may be so in your case, particularly if it is the pierburg type. One simple thing that costs pennies to rule out is to check and replace your vaccum hoses. If these are old/perished they may collapse under heavy suction. This can cause amongst other things, a faliure in operation of the second throttle butterfly which would be apparent with sporty throttle demands.
Of course it may be many other things that I don't have a clue about, being fairly new to T25s and boxer engines!
Yes- fuel blockage is another possibility and usually cheap to fix/rule out- dunt forget the little sieve/cone filter in the carb itself though!

I've Replaced the fuel filter, i've actually got a second one which i put before the fuel pump some years ago, it has always seemed to work ok, do you think this could be the problem? i replaced them both yesterday anyway.
Im never to sure about carbs, other than squirting a bit of cleaner in there from time to time, and when i take it to my mates garage he just says throw it away and put a weber on it!
I'll look into these over the weekend and keep you posted,
Many thanks for your replys

Don't put a weber on it!!
plugs, leads, cap and rotor all good?
and it shouldn't need two filters...or the pump will be working too hard to pull the fuel through.

Re: Bus behaving badly, help!!
Reads to me plugs and leads or like a mixture issue when warm.
That can only happen if you have an air leak or choke fault.
So
when warm, check the choke flap is fully open.
If the choke is ok then check for air leaks.
Vacuum hoses
servo hose
choke pull down unit failure
gaskets split.
Judder is a misfire.
Webers are crap and do not work properly on these engines.
Remove the filter from the engine bay it is not required

Re: Bus behaving badly, help!!
Ive just taken the plugs out n given them a good clean, diodes looked a bit naff, but put them back in, also put some other ht leads on and a dizzy cap both in good nick, let it get to the temp where it normally gets lumpy and all seemed good, gave it a couple of blasts up n down a road still fine, pulled up outside my mates house to tell him the good news, ticking over fine, got back in to go home, put my foot down.... back fire, cut out , now wont start.
could it be a plug breaking down ?, havent renewed them in 3 years , ill get some tommorow n give that a go.
Thank you all, for your advice

Left it half an hour to cool still nothing, stuck the old coil on out of desparation, it fired up, could i have been sold the wrong coil, i took the old one to gsf so he could match it, but it was the one that was on it when i bought the bus, so i dont now if its the right one or not ? does anyone now the part no.

JK's single Weber + manifold kits might be.... a pair of proper Webers (not the repo pants things) are quite good..they work well for me at least!

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

Stop effing about and do things properly.
you have to eliminate stuff not guess
you asked for help and got some good replies... so what have you done ?
Did you...
get rid of the filter
buy some new plugs and leads.
check it for induction leaks with brake cleaner
and...What the blithering heck are diodes on plugs?
