derusting and sealing up rear quarter snorkel boxes

Post by xpress »

what a jolly little piece of fun this is! i have found these tabs that seem to cover up little drain holes and allow them to drain. super design, moisture drains constantly into the rear quarter panels, helping to rot them out. am i right in thinking i can derust this area and seal all this up with fiberglass and drill a hole in the middle of the X? how big would you make the drain hole and would you just make one drain hole?

could i just cut out this big square with the X on it and fit estate agent plastic cardboard in its place and fiberglass it to the edges of the box? please advise.

Not too sure i would replace the metal with plastic. I can see where your coming from with the idea but it was made that way for a reason. Fibreglass will only cover the problem and it will only get worse. Best bet would be to make a plate up and weld it in, or even just a repair piece. You may find when you clean all that up that the hole will be bigger than it looks now.

yes, i am beginning to get used to holes getting bigger. in the wiki it says to drill a hole in the middle of the x, i assume to also seal up the hole near the bodywork? i was thinking that a grp/fibreglass plate instead of this metal sheet at the bottom of the box xection just because it's an air intake and it only seems to rot out. fresh metal and waxoyl would probably be ok too.

you cover that rotten stuff with anything and you will make a luvly humid space for the rust to grow unhindered, sorry but cut out and weld is the way to go, also dont just drill a hole in the cross its a bit more involved.

it will be cut out and welded. if it's more involved than drilling a hole, flanging, deburring, in the centre of the cross, could you or others add it into the wiki?

Okk I will try to find the ones Ive done and ask for it to be added.
basically the plate should have the cross formed in it and the plate thus has a slight dish to the centre, the drain hole is set in a further depression, the idea I suppose is for all the water that gets in there to have a definate path out, or so the theory goes

just done page 3 reading that thread, will have to take a few valium for page 4! luckily my wagon isn't needing as much tlc in that area, but i am sure my chariot will (and has) made up for it in other areas. that hole you can see daylight in, is on the top, (near the seam) small rectangular rear quarter panel and that's all back to bare metal and ready to be made good.

good work btw mickey i love those sort of threads.

:ok

will follow up on some pics to show how i am getting on..............

i was thinking how i could drill holes around this area or leave these holes open, seeing how they seem to rust out and drain water out, but then it would only let in water etc unless a deflector was put there. trying to work this area out. you can see these metal tabs, underneath these are drain holes, but they haven't stopped water collecting and rusting into holes still! so i am still scratching my head, they're going to have to be sealed up and then maybe some more drain holes added.

is it ok to wack an injection lance up those holes and blast some dynax around the place in there? it's a 1985/6 watercooled. there's no air intake problems or electrical problems spraying wax in there right? i won't be using the van for a few days so the wax will harden off i would have thought.
