2.1 auto stalling upon drive help needed

Post by munro »

okay this van has been looked at by loads of people and it is really no better.

all the usual stuff has been checked with other parts and cleaned etc but it still stalls upon taking up drive or reverse.

timing is set at around 7.5degress btdc

ticks over pretty smooth idle can be adjusted on the big screw

soon as you try and take up drive though it stalls unless you set timing advanced and idle racing!

Also perhaps more worrying is that when driving at speed it is pretty slow and sluggish anyway...

can of worms i know but earths have been done/ecu/idle stabiliser/clean throttle body etc

could engine just be shot or gearbox sucking to much power?????

any help much appreciated

cheers

have you checked/changed gearbox fluids ?
to check the idle control is working try compressing the idle control valve pipe (the zig zag one)to the inlet pipe (elephants trunk) at idle, on a DJ it should start to die then pick up again as ECU increases fuelling and advances timing if this works then it suggests ecu and engine management are ok so it's a torque converter/box issue ?
I'm not familiar with all the connections on the auto, the box is more connected than on a manual and obviously the torque converter is permenantly driven whereas we have a clutch so can easily separate the engine and transmission for diagnosis

Aidan thanks ...i am starting to think it is a box problem as well...as it sounds lovely on idle...and everything on the engine side has been swapped and checked etc...for a while the engine would just die like an electrical short but this was fixed mainly due to arcing in the cap apparently. The main problem is that neither the box or engine have ever run correctly. We had the box rebuilt and the guy had to do it 3 times and oil was still spewing out so he gave up. We than had a used one put in and at least the oil stayed in this time and it drives but it just lacks power and the changes seem rough to me. Also every now again there is a rumble and clicking noise that seems to be coming from the torque converter area..feels like i am going round in circles!

anyone with an engine and auto box together working!!!!!!

hi there have had it compression tested i had a same prob with mine last year and it was getting worse ,i had to have the tick over about 1500 or adjust the timing as the same as you . we thought it was fuel ,mines an auto but with a carb so i got the carb set up but it was still there then we had the compression test done and 2 cylinder was down maybe have it tested . it was the best 25.00 i spent on my van . also when you changed the gearbox did you use your torq convertor and changed the seal . also when you fit the new box in did you adjust throttle cable at the pedal to reset cable rough changing starts at the pedal useaully ,the you might have a carb box with a injection set up . have you got the old box still where was it leaking from and was it working ok

okay....thanks for your help..

compression was a bit low on 3 and 4. Someone tried to reset the hydraulic tappets for some reason on 3/4 and once turned in 2 turns there was no compression. Turned back out 2 turns and back to 100. Think the others were 120

The original box stopped driving completely. Had it rebuilt but never really drove it beacause oil was spewing from top relief valve on the axle/diff part of the box.

Guy said something needed welding,Pinion? he changed seal but that did not work.

2nd hand box ...don't know if it was off a carb engine.

Pretty sure the original torque convertor was used.

How do you adjust the pedal?

Many thanks...
