1st gear selection

Post by dave lfc »

hi just recently bought a van it has a first gear problem.you sort of have to coax it into first put pushing slightly down on the gear stick to engage first.anyone have any ideas what this could be and does it sound costly.just want to get it sorted as its abit fiddly, thanks dave :ok

mine does it to...its to do with the box under the gearstick being from a 4 speed, and you having a 5 speed box in.its annoying innit,i want to change mine at some point.
normally on a 4 speed box all you would have is the 'push down' to get into reverse..but now its a 5 speed the 1st gear is in there too

could be 20+ years of wear on the gear change bushes etc. Is it just 1st thats a problem and does th stick feel like a dick in shirt sleeve? could also just ned slightly adjusting

in that case..there are 2 studs under the gearstick gaitor..see if they need adjusting

My old bus was tricky to get into first. There are 2 13mm nuts under the gaitor and the stick has slightly elongated holes for tiny adjustment. See if they make any difference, just take the socket out and go drive around, stop adjust slightly, drive. Only way of properly getting it o.k

Hello,

4 speed box.

Drop the spare wheel.

Look for and remove the tin box covering the gearshift, 10 mm nuts, beware of cr*p falling in your eyes.

Look to see if the plastic sliders are still intact. They have to be greased with a non petroleum grease.

Also, there should be a plastic slider pad, on the inside (nearside) of the tin box. If this is missing find a bit of polyprop about 150 mm by 50 by 4 mm thick, glue centrally over the 3 locating holes.

Robert will then be your father's brother. :rofl :rofl :rofl

Cordialement,

:ok
