Is it really easy to change the fuel pump?

OK so spanners at the ready... the AA man told me I could do this myself, the part is here and tomorrow is the day. But is it really that straight foreward? will fuel be in the pipes? what will I need? I've not fixed anything on the van before . I've looked on the Wiki but cant see it.

You have forgotten to tell us what engine is in your van. Is it water cooled, air cooled, diesel? My crystal ball is broken.

The most common engine is probably the 1.9DG petrol. Replacing the fuel pump is easy. On the 2.0l air cooled the fuel pump is underneath the engine & not as easily accessible. 1.6 air cooled easy - same fuel pump as the 1.9DG. Diesel - havn't a clue.

2.1 injected - really easy. It's under the sliding door opening. Just a couple of rubber mounts to the body, then the hose clips. Put a new fuel filter on at the same time.

Sorry I've still got baby brain Its a 1.9 petrol and its easy to get to, the AA man pointed it out to me, right on top.

The fuel pump on a 1.9DG petrol has 2 bolts holding it in place. There is a fuel hose which comes into the engine bay on the offside & runs across the top of the engine to the punp. There a a short fuel hose from the pump to the carb. The pump is mounted on a pedestal with a thin gasket above & below the pedestal. Replace the gaskets & the fuel hose at the same time as the pump for peace of mind. Remember, perished fuel hose = van flambe'.

So we have done it! After much wiggling as the new part's top arm bit was bigger than the old ones, we didnt change the rubber pipe, but it does need to go to the garage this week to get the indicator done so I'll get them to check it's safe. The only problem now is that we have a flat battery, and it's parked too far away for out extention lead with charger to reach the van duh!!!!!!! Hopefully some nice person in our apartment block will lend us one or a jump.

I did think of that. But it is wedged in. I got the wires unscrewed and tried to pull it out then realised that the chair plate is a cm or so over the hole and the lid curves round to form a ridge that wedges the battery in. I think I would need to shift the chair plate somehow... Lordy its like pulling a loose peice of thread... one thing leads to another and another.... No one so far has offered to lend me either an extension lead or a jump. If I lived on a street rather than a block some nice person would have been out by now. What's happened to community spirit? I can see people sat on their balconies watching me struggle with my extension lead and the baby, shameful!

It's charging now... just to double check.. there were two small plates that came with the fuel pump, these do go underneith it dont they?

The ''small plates'' are gaskets. The one with the larger hole in it goes between the pump & the pedestal & the one with the smaller hole (or no hole?) goes between the pedestal & the engine block.

On Sunday you posted ''So we have it done''. Did we forget to fit the gaskets, perchance?

OK forgive my terminology but now I know we have done something wrong as we put both gaskets under the pump (where the screws are) I think we need to take one out and put it somewhere else. Hmm from you post I think the small one needs to come out of there and go somewhere else... If we just take it out will it work? I need to take it into the garage tomorrow anyway but just need the blooming thing to get there! arh! also is it dangerous in its current state in which case I wont try it when the battery is charged.
