Gearbox whine

Post by Daryl1 »

Just returned from a 600mile run in my 89 Multivan. Nearing home the van developed a bit of gearbox whine. It whines under acceleration and is fine when stationary. It sounds like an old metro!

The van is a 1.6TD with a five speed box.
Before I start taking things apart, does anyone have any idea what the cause might be, and which bearing is most likely causing it?

Many thanks
Daryl

Thanks, is it a straight forward job or easier to swap for another 'box?
I've done a resto on a bug and engine re builds before, but never gone any further than release bearings on a gearbox!
Thanks

have a read of the procedure in Bentley manual
finding a genuinely good used 5 speed is pretty difficult they are mostly like yours or almost that far gone; I haven't and none of the big boys appear to have any 5 speed core boxes that are any good and all we can do is rebuild customers boxes
