Early DF to Late DG wiring help

Post by nickgrise »

Hello all,

First of all, A big thank you to everyone who contributes to this site. I would be lost without it!

I bought my first T25 about 3 months ago. It is a 1984 hightop that originally had a 1.9 petrol DF engine fitted. The previous owner had changed the engine to an early DG at some point. The engine was seized when I bought the van, so I removed it and stripped it down. I found that one of the big end bearings had picked up and the conrod had welded on to the crank. The rest of the engine was in a pretty bad state, so I decided to replace it rather than rebuild.

I bought a late DG engine out of a 1989 caravelle with about 90k on the clock. I have fitted it and after a fair amount of messing around the cooling system is now sorted.

I am now trying to sort out the engine electrics and could use some advice please! Specifically, has anyone fitted a late DG in to a van that has wiring for an early DF? Here are a few pics that show the current state of the engine bay:

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I have made some progress with the van today, engine is now running. I still have a few wires to connect and need some advice please.

Are the these brown wires with a white male+female connector oil pressure sensors? Where would they connect to the van?
Image

I haven't connected the blue+black striped wire that has a red female spade connector, or the brown+black striped wire with a white female spade connector. Any idea what these are and where they connect?

I haven't connected anything to the sensors (2 x 2 pin) in the t/stat housing. Would the red+yellow striped wire connect to one of these sensors? Also there is a male spade connector on the side of the dizzy that I haven't connected yet, any ideas?

The van starts easily but dies unless I give it a bit of throttle. I tried adjusting the idle speed on the carb, tick over increased but engine still dies after a few seconds.

I would really appreciate some help! Thanks

the double staggered white conector on the loom is the oil pressure connector, the two single browns coming from the oil pressure contacts should plug into them using a matching connector, but if your loom has the double plug then it's late ie 1986 on with bod circuit you need them both
yellow with red is the temp gauge goes to the temp sender in the thermostat housing, originally it went to a single contact temp sender in the water pipe on top of the engine, on the late model the sender has two contacts, needs and earth on one side
I don't have access to a DG so I can't check the rest of the wiring

Thanks for the reply. Electrics now sorted and engine is running well. Failed the MOT last week as the front brakes are binding. I'll be fitting new callipers this week ready for a retest on Saturday. Fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Nick
