Help please - won't start :(

Post by Bert1985 »

You will have to excuse this post as I am writing it without questionning my husband!!! (he is currently swearing outside!!) and I have learnt to leave him to it :D
Martin has today drained the stale fuel out of "Bert" and put some fresh in - he then decided to take him round the block. Bert stalled at every junction and then finally across our neighbours driveway where he refused to start again :( There is no engine sounds at all when turning the ignition.

Bert refused to be jump started and so was finally pushed into his position on the drive.

Please can anyone give us any idea of what may the problem so I can print it off and wrap it around a can of kronenberg and see if it will calm Martin down!!!!

:ok

Oh and yes I have trawled through wiki xx

If the fuel was drained out of the normal fuel outlet it might have got blocked by any rust or dirt that was in the tank. This could be why the van was stalling? If the van ended up being restarted a lot of times on its test drive that might have flattened the battery. Try pulling the fuel hose off the tank and see if the fuel floods out or trickles (have a container handy). If it dribbles out try poking a wire coat hanger up the tube to clear the blockage. Check the voltage on the starter battery. If its less than 12.6v put it on charge for a few hours.

Thank you, I have read this to Martin and the battery is now on charge and I have instructions to find a metal coat hanger tomorrrow so he can tinker away when he comes home from work.

I have everything crossed as we have worked so hard and sailed through the MOT yesterday - he was so excited to take Bert for a spin and then he was so dissapointed when it started going wrong!!

:ok

Have a look at the fuel filter by the tank as well. It should have caught any rust etc that might have been pulled out of the tank. If it looks a bit dirty change it anyway, they're about a quid from any auto-factors.

Martin was very relieved when he built up the courage to fix the problem to find that all it was was a lead had come off the starter motor - phew!!! Many thanks for your advice :ok
