As you have not stated what engine. We will assume its a petrol.Theres a good chance with running it dry.You have sucked a fair bit of sh*te into your fuel filter.(just after the tank) Theres also a small filter in the carb.Best check both of these first off.

Petrol or Diesel? If petrol, a splash of petrol down the top of the carb usually does the trick. Diesel then the pump wants priming, take to outlet off the filter housing and pump the filter housing till fuel comes through. Should do it....yorkshireTraction wrote:after running empty (faulty fuel gauage) refuelled from a jerry can but cant get it started, any clues??cheers

Takes a while to fill the filter and prime the pump.
Take the pump outlet line off the carb take the king lead off, plugs out and spin the engine faster untill you get a squirt?

Re: is there a knack to starting the van after running empty??
tried doing the suggestions but still no good, gave up last night then looked again today and on closer inspection the fuel hose i noticed had a small split and i assume was letting air in,there was enough slack on the hose to trim it back past the split,re-connected (jubilee clip about knackered though) and tightened up the clip, held me breath turned the key and she fired up,i have a feeling the fuel hose diameter is to small though its really tight to get on,how do i know if they are correct or not?

Find a dual carriageway, floor the throttle and see if you can reach the speed limit. If you can then there's enough petrol getting through.i have a feeling the fuel hose diameter is to small though its really tight to get on,how do i know if they are correct or not?
