slipping out of 5th gear

Post by Lefty »

Has anyone had this problem?

I have a 5 speed box in my 1.6td westy joker. The gearbox was reconditioned last year, and a new clutch was fitted, and since then i have only done about 3000 miles max. On a trip to Cornwall a week back, towards the end of the 180 mile trip, whilst driving along the van would slip out of 5th into neutral. Following this, i found you could hold it in fifth, although the gearbox felt 'tight' at times.

This is coupled with a reverse gear that is a real sod to find at times - reverse has always been a pain, but of late it is far worse. Called out a breakdown guy who called up a VW specialist in Wadebridge, and they seemed to think the gearbox would need looking at again. Spoke to another mechanic friend who suggested looking at engine mounts first, suggesting that the problem could be due to engine/gearbox movement when the rubbers warm up.

Any ideas anyone? My recon gearbox is out of warranty now, and not being too mechanically minded, i am at a loss as to where to go from here. Can still drive the van, but need to sort out these sodding gears so that i can drive in comfort on those longer journeys. :?

forgot to mention the problem is intermittent - 5th does work ok at times, but after a while, will slip out again.

I would be more inclined to check the set up of the mechanism first, rev is fully in on the box and 5th out so if you have any slack/wear in the linkage /shift box it is possible that you are not fully engaging either of these gears, also you need to confirm that the plate at the g box end is on the correct side of the brackety and also it can be fitted upside down so to speak
still works but the nylon ball is almost out of the socket on fore and aft movement, I had one like this . stiull got the gears but it was a long movement.
its all in the wiki and worth a good check before box = £££
