You could walk or drive around to Daymer Bay, it tends to be a bit quieter than Polzeath because there's no surf there. You can catch the foot ferry across to Padstow from the beach and the kids can spent their money there. Around the corner from Padstow are a few bays but they probably won't be much quieter. You could try Harlyn, Constantine or Treyarnon all have parking close'ish to the beaches.

I'd second Daymer Bay - there'll be a few people windsurfing and a few walking their dogs, but it's a huge beach (at low tide) and never busy. Car park is right by the beach - only downside is it's privately owned and ISTR was a bit expensive last time I was there (which was several years ago). No parking on the approach road. You get there by driving out of Polzeath to the south (opposite direction to South Winds) and taking a right fork after a mile or so.
The ferries to Padstow actually leave from Rock, which is another mile-ish up the Camel Estuary. There is beach there, although not as nice as Daymer.

If you do go over to Padstow here's what Treyarnon looked like today at mid-day.

And this is Constantine about 20 minutes later.

Both were pretty busy, but probably not as hectic as Polzeath.
