Alternatior bearing spec

Post by jamiehamy »

Hi all,

I've been having issues with my alternator and believe the bearings are shot. It makes a screeching noise when idling or sometimes at higher revs and I don't believe it's the belt (I've tightened it, loosened it and all sorts!).

I can't find what bearings to order and was wondering if anyone could help, or point me in the right direction please? Have looked on justbearings, but no idea what size i need.

It's from a 1.7d, Bosch 068 903 031 D

I'd rather try fix it even though you can get new ones on ebay for under £50.

Thanks, J

If you have taken the bearings out and go to your local bearing factors they will be able to sort you, or measure them and then get a quote online from a supplier.Digital measuring calipers are cheap enough.
They could well be part nos. BEARING - S.R.E 1 120 905 102 & BEARING - D.E 1 120 905 533 but that exact alternator no. doesn't appear in the Bosch parts catalogue that I have. The closest is 068 903 029 N / ( 0 120 469 734 ) / ( BX469734 ).

I have just replaced the bearings in my alternator, when you take the bearings out you can measure them easily, mine still had the code numbers on. When ordering Specify 'C-3' clearance

Cool, thanks all.

I've eliminated the water pump as it's fine when I take the alternator pulley off. Will take bearings off and measure,

Thanks again, Jamie :)

Hi,

Did my bearings recently but cant remember sizes, but whilst its apart check the carbon brushes and slip-rings. My slip rings were very grooved and almost worn through so replaced as they can only be done after splitting the alternator and removing the bearing. Cheap part but a bit fiddly to do.

My bearings were very tight and required both heat and a puller to remove

Cheers.. Phil
