Alternator belt noise

Post by proober »

Hi Clubers,

I'm new to the world of the T25, but when I got my transporter a friend who knows his onions looked over my van and suggested I got the the alternator belt replaced.

Which I duly did.

Recently it's started squeeling again. So I assume it wasnt fitted/adjusted properly at the garage.

But...today, as my girlfriend drove off in Lilly, the oil gauge went crazy, peaking hard left then hard right.

She's parked up away from me [so I can't go and check oil today etc] but I'm just wondering...

Could the two be connected? ie. alternator issues affecting oil gauge or is that nonsense? am I simply looking at two seperate 'welcome to the world of the T25' issues?

My knowledge of the inner workings of automotive vehicles could fill a thimble, barely.

Thanks for your help, proob

As the oil gauge in non original it's hard to say because we don't know what type it is, how it is wired/plumbed etc.
If the best is squeeling it has probably just 'bedded in' and need adjusting.

I doubt the two are connected. the oil gauge sounds electronic so that would be the first point of call ..the analogue converter for the gauge.

If the belt is squealing (or is it the alternator bearings?) try tightening it using the alternator belt tension adjustment.
usually the longest run of the belt can only move 1/2 inch up and down

thanks for the replies guys,
turned out to be the water pump was on it's last legs [bearings shot] probably due to the garage who serviced it when we bought her not sorting the alternator belt out properly [which is what we took her in for in the first place!]. we won't be going back there. so we had to leave Lilly at home over the weekend and take a hire car to a the festival which was meant to be our first in our new van! typical.

but on a positive note this happend before we leave for a month in france and we can get it sorted beforehand. Also managed to find the T25 specialist I was looking for here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90113 and he is a DOOD. Even came down to look at Lilly after guiding me over the phone to discover the real problem [when I thought it was simply a burst water pipe]. So the engine is [hopefully] ok. He'll change the pump tomorrow and bleed the system and we'll be on our way again.

Oh yeah the very helpful mechanic [based in cardiff] is called Chris and his website is http://www.volksengineering.co.uk/.
