Starting Problems

Post by kemshell »

Hi Guys, I have a 1981 2L aircool van. When the van has been standing for about 5 days the only way to start the van is a spray fuel into the carbs. The van has been into the garage a number of times and I have been told the fuel pump is working ok. It was also just had a new starter motor

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks..... Paul

when cold, press gas pedal. Now go look down the carbs, the flaps should be closed.
When running these will open as it warms up. Thats if you have auto chokes???

What carbs have you got? I had the same with the Dellorto's until i fitted a non-return valve in the fuel line. I also fitted an electric fuel pump that helps prime the carbs, in place of the mechanical which only pumps when the engine turns over.

I also fitted an electric fuel pump last year, turn the key primes up to carbs then starts first time.
Sound like the fuel is not getting there right away.
Do you have to turn over for a while before she fires?

It starts fine first time when the vehicle has run the previous day. The problem only occurs when it has been left for more that 5 days, it is as though all the fuel drains out of the engine.
