I have a problem with one of my headlights (near side) The side lights on their own work ok. The dipped near side is very dim, at the same time the side light is also dim, plus the indicator comes on also very dim. (indicator not in operation mode) Main beam, very dim.
Off side: side, main, dipped all work OK.
Having read previous posts/answers I have cleaned the earth terminals on the two 'Crowns' but in doing so noticed a loose brown cable coming off the rear crown. There are two brown cables on one spade on the crown, the thinner one appears to be connected OK but the thicker one is not. I'ts only a short cable so must be connected close to the 'Crown'. It's just not obvious where!!
Can anyone help please. (a small wiring diagram covering the area would be most useful, just do'nt understand Haynes)
Many Thanks
Cyprus Dave

If all three at the one side are faulty, then there's likely a common cause and the earth is common to all three lights.
To confirm if the earth is the problem, run a wire from the earth terminal on the light cluster to a suitable chassis bolt/screw/scraped clean spot, if the lights brighten up that proves off the fault. It's more likely to be a damaged wire/connector than a wire off.

And as with all things....chassis return means you can aways add extra earthing points without any detrement.
The basic weakness of all chassis return systems is lots of earth wires going back to too few earthing points. If you find a poor earthing point there is every possibility to move that earth to a clearner point...just remember, paint is an insulator so take back to bare metal and treat once the connections are made..An earthing post is always a good idea, (6 or 8mm nut/bolt through a heavy piece of bare chassis then the bolt area painted, a number of earths can then be added with eyelet connections.

Re: Headlight Problem Transporter 1985
Thank you very much for your replies, I have scraped/cleaned and made sure of good earth connections, and run a cable from the 'Earth Crown' to a known good earth point but still I am dim, and so are my lights!!
With regard to the brown cable that is not connected I may not have made myself clear in my earlier Post: The brown cable is connected to the 'Earth Crown' but is a bare wire the other end. I would not say it is a broken cable as it has been stripped back for some sort of connection. It's only about 12cm's long so must connect somewhere close to the 'Earth Crown'. It's just not obvious where!! You would have thought there would be a connector with no wire attached but I'm too dim to see it. Any more suggestions/wiring diagrams will be much appreciated
Thanks Again

Footprint & Martin
I've fixed it. It was a broken earth wire under the dashboard coming off the light fitting, and was ofcourse the other end of the short 12 cm wire coming off the earth crown.
Many thanks for your help & suggestions.
