front caliper sheered bleed nipple

Post by Cyrus »

I sheered of the bleed nipple on the ns front calipers today
is there any way of removing it? it sheered off level with the caliper so can't get any grip now.
or is it a replacement job? do they accept them with sheered bleed nuts as Exchange?

Ps them means brickwerks and the like.

don't know any reliable way of removing them as they are quite soft and the seat mustn't be damaged, rost off, patience, more rost off, heat, easy out might work if you are lucky
yes they accept them with sheared nipple that's probably the most common reason to change them
copperslip the new one, don't overtighten, ensure they have a cap on to keep water out

Cheers,
I think a replacement is a more sensible idea, I'll only end up buggering it up.

This will be no help if your nipples have sheared, but I think you can help with a bit of prevention. I use a couple of turns of plumbers PTFE joint tape around the threads, and every year when I'm doing my pre-MOT check, I just slacken them a smidge and tighten them up again. It really is a lot cheaper than snapping them off.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

Easy peasy, have done it many times
Buy a new nipple and choose a drill bit the next size down from the internal thread size (use vernier calipers to measure) use new nipple to gauge how far down to drill into the broken one NOT into the seat in the caliper that creates the seal between nipple and caliper. Drill down to just before the seat (mark the drill bit with tape so you know how far to go) then get a masonary nail (hard as fek) grind the point to make a wee chisel point and fold over the edges of the drilled nipple so that you collapse it into itself. it will loosen after a bit and unscrew with needle nose pliers. take your time and it will be ok.
