White smoke and smell burning oil..advice needed please...
I have just been recovered back from la touquet (France) as had a day trip today and everything going hunky dorie until i reached the last long climb of a hill starting at bottom of hill at approx 55mph by the time i had nearly reached top my speed dropped to 25mph and white smoke coming from exhust and bad oil burning smell.I managed to stop at toll turned her off pilled all stuff out back with extinguiser at the ready and let engine cool down as i know what these Aircooled engines are like. After 1 hr cooling period starting her up and guided her to resting point up la touquet beach, got kids out and wife and checked engine bay again to find a oil leak the size of a fist but stopped which stopped while engine were'nt running so i did'nt want to risk more damage so got my baby recovered. She starts fine and drives fine but engine gets very hot after 10 mins and still got the white smoke and burning oil smell.....Please i need advice as to what her trouble could be..Thanks guys.....Dave

find a oil leak the size of a fist but stopped which stopped
dya not think some more detail on what you mean by this, might point us in the right direction

So what does it mean, a hole the size of a fisst? but stopped, which stopped

where is it exactly?
how did it occur ?
I suppose you at least saved us the potential for embarrassment by saying it was an Aircooled...

So in yours can only be oil overheating, or flooded with fuel (usually black smoke)
Mechanical sounds ? Has it been drinking fuel lately, has the choke been working fine lately ?

PS. Is it all standard and has it got all the cowling fitted, oil cooler and flaps ?
Yes, 'presuming' its a 2.0 a/c CU or CV type motor

Your oil leak is peeing out on to the hot exhaust by the way it reads.
Is all the tinware in place?
Were you revving the engine for a long time climbing the hill at low speed?
Have you had or driven Aircooled engines before?
A little more technical infomation would help.

Hey Dave, sorry to here that mate - why does it always happen when you're out with the family
On the bright side, you were only about 50 miles from home - as the crow flies
From what you've said I'm with Kev, that it sounds like an oil leak spraying onto a hot exhaust, if you are saying it only leaks with the engines running then that would be consistent with a leak under pressure.
I would be more concerned about why the performance dropped off as you climbed the hill (or is this normal for an air-cooled
)
When you have recovered, (saw the time of the post last night and bet you weren't in the best frame of mind!) ping up a few more details.
If you want a "physical" second opinion give me a shout and I will pop down and have a look
Cheers,
MM

Re: White smoke and smell burning oil..advice needed please...
Sorry folks i were'nt thinking straight when i posted this as it had been a very long day starting at 4am and ending at midmidnight. She is a 2ltr Aircooled and an auto, the oil leak once it hits the floor is the size of a cd but once engine is turnt off no leak.As for the way it happened i was cruising along at 55mph climbing a gradiant 5 hill which seemed to go for miles and speed gradually went down to 25mph followed by white smoke bellowing from exhust once i got to top of hill coming down other side could not go above 40mph.I pulled over at tolls and engine was so so hot and oil everwhere and plenty of smoke.I have driven Aircooled before and as for the fuel she has been drinking alot in the past couple of weeks.I cant see if crankcase is split too much oil so i cant see hope advice comes my way. Thanks guys...Dave

Het i jacked up and Jet Wash it good and proper in a dirty place, sounds one way of proceeding, to find the problem. Something split, broken, cracked I suspect... maybe a pushrod tube NB. I know less than little about a/cooleds
) ?
