gut less and high fuel consumpsion
hi there im sure youve all seen a thred like this before so im sorry if this upsets anyone.im new to owning a t25 petrol(airooled).
my problem is that it seems gut less and usess alot of fuel(no leaks). ive servied it checked the timing whih is fine.now it starts first time everytime but will cut out untill warm.the lack of power only seems to be in top gear and when going up hills, ive done a compression check and they are all fine im thinking the problem lies with the carbs but not sure any advice would be greatfully reicived.and one again sorry if this has already been covered in another post

Re: gut less and high fuel consumpsion
What engine? 1.6 or 2L?? I'll guess 2L as a 1.6 is gutless in any gear..
What are you used to driving?? as these weigh in at 2 tons camperized and only have 70 BHP on a good day.. they wont perform like any modern vehicle..
What mpg are you getting? 17 to 24 is about all you'll see.. short, round town stuff can see even less... as will driving it hard...

As you say 'carbs' i'm guessing its a 2ltr. I've had one in a bay and there are a number of posibilities. I agree with TMT about the basics that its a heavy van with a max 70hp engine at best so be patient BUT- the old solex set up gets very worn especially around the butterfly's and can appear to be tuned right but then lets in extra air causing a weak mixture which is no good for you. If I were you I'd either take it to Steve at Gasue to check the carbs or if you knwo compression is good and ignition system is set right but a second hand set of weber ICT carbs which are quite simple to fit and tune ona T4 engine as long as they have the right size needles and venturis for your engine. They have no chokes but you don't need them with those carbs and short manifolds. If your carbs are dne for and you continue to run them on a decent engine you'll never get any propr perfomance out of it. But i guess you need to get them checled properly first. Good luck. My recommendation is a Mk 3 Gti set up on LPG- cheap and you'll not look back!

Re: gut less and high fuel consumpsion
Im interested to see the outcome of this. My engines a CU too with solex pdsit 34 carbs and having the same power related problems. I set the timing last weekend to the haynes manual spec and took it for a 30 mile drive and it felt like I was driving with the hand brake on and very stuttery on hills. Also alot of exhaust popping at idle. Previous to my adjustments it was running like a train although the timing was alot more advanced. No noticeable air leaks but Im going to have a good look with a can of carb cleaner. Since then I've changed the dizzy cap and rotor. Running ok on the flat but still not runing great and stuttery on hills so I think its definately a carb problem i.e they're not very well tuned and out of sync??

Re: gut less and high fuel consumpsion
As mentioned, if your carbs are original and not been rebuilt (ie removed and throttle flap rebushed by a specialist as well as new gasket kit), they will not perform on the button and will most likely not idle evenly without increasing idle speed above 1000rpm. Roger Ball (see carbs in WIKI) rebushes them at reasonable cost. Essentially to tune it up, everything needs to be in good condition to start with otherwise you're on a hiding to nothing.
If compression good and spark side is A1, then you need to examine carbs carefully. Any wear in throttle flaps (up and down movement) is indicative of carbs in need of restoration.

This may just be a case of managing expectations ... What were you expecting to get mpg-wise ? and how fast do you want to go ? Compared to a 2.5TDi all standard UK T25 engines are 'gutless'.

Still won't do acceptable mpg if the nice new person is expecting 30mpg though
