cost of new rear door

Post by Big Boris »

hi all ,just thuoght i would give you a break down of cost to replace your rear door with a second hand one ,ours was tottaly shot with rust along the bottom so decided to renew it .bought a second hand one in much better shape from bvf last year,i dare say there may be a few of you out there thinking of doing the same so this might be of some help:
second hand door £65
respray (pastel white ) £250
tint and refit glass £90
new window seal £30 ish ,cant remember exact amount
new lock £35
new california sticker £15
new vw badge £15

TOTAL - £500

i expect you could save in a few areas,i better mention the guy who tried to refit the window with the new seal had a right job we didnt think it was gonna go back in !!
hope this might help someone out there

I presume it wasn't a genuine seal? JK etc seals are renowned for being difficult to fit or do not fit at all (as happend to me). Genuine seals go straight in and fit really well.

hi tom ,
it was from gunzl so i assumed it was vw ....the guy at the tinting place said he would put it in for £20 he tried and gave up leaving me stuck in swindon with no glass in the back of the van ,i ended up going to national mobile windscreens in old town swindon the lad there did it for £30 and really struggled ,whilst there he gave me a qoute to do front - new screen old seal fitted £ 80 ,out of intrest i stopped at autoglass they said it would be £100 just fitting for the rear window ,and the bloke said id be better off going to a smaller company who would do it for half the price ..

I would normally expect Gunzles products to be genuine/of the highest quality.

I bought rubbers from JK and had major problems with them. Mainly the rear screen. I could not get the rubber to sit against the metal. There were in places 1-2mm gap along the top. I took pics and emailed them to JK and they sent me a new rubber. Again same problem. I bought a genuine seal from VW Status, it had moulded corners. It took less than 5 minutes to fit and it fitted perfectly.

for me it was acase of not having the time but also wanting it to be as good as possible as hoping to keep van for a few more years yet ,and dont fancy doing it again ... but i would have loved to had a go at spraying it myself and i supose tinting the window would have also been doable too ,its horses for courses tho im trying to keep alid on the rust for now and maybe get a full respray in the future ,it does make a massive difference having a non rusty rear door tho :rofl ,hope it all goes well for you ,
