changing the diesel fuel filter

Post by conkers »

Hi i have looked through the posts re new diesel fuel filters as i am about to do this job. By priming i assume people mean filling the filter with diesel before putting it on. I assume i just then turn the engine over until it fires? what about the inevitable air bubbles? will they just pass through the system? some people seem more concerned than others about this...i want to get rid of them to get the most out of the 1.6 d so i am not overtaken by skateboarders. :D

I pre filled mine and it started OK. a few air bubble but it seemed alright once it got going. I think there is an inline bulb hand pump you can fit to aid priming but I'm not sure of the 'official' method.

Kit - does the non-return valve go before the filter or after it?

Between the filter and pump, I have never had any starting problems since fitting one.

I pre-fill or prime my filters by connecting the return fuel line to the new filter.
Let the engine tick over for a bit and the filter will fill up.
Remove the present filter, fit the new filter, check that all lines are connected and that the filter is secure.

Start your engine, it should fire up nearly straightaway with a bit of spluttering/juddering.

Give it a run and then check that all the lines are connected and that there are no leaks.
