Has anyone got/bettered the MPG specs in the manual?

Post by Zebedee »

For a 1.9wbx caravelle the manual I have says 29.7mpg @ steady 56mph and 20.7mpg urban.

Has anyone got anywhere near those figures with a stock bus or even bettered them?

We got 27 mpg overall average doing France, Spain and Portugal, towns, mountains (Picos de Europa) and open road, 2700 miles.
Kept to 60 max, often less, as these need gentle treatment - like me really!

These figures are 'independant and official' so they are accurate to a point. However, remember that these figures are not fully loaded (as in, everything including the kitchen sink off on your gollies), they don't include multiple passengers plus the dog and they are taken from testing a new vehicle.

Therefore, it is possible to get close or even beat them on the very rare occasion but more often than not, a few miles short of these figures if we are being totally honest.

I get nowhere near the 56mph figure in a tired 1.9wbx but I do get 17mpg urban on LPG.

A journey from Scotland to Oxford with a tin-top B-reg 1.9 dg/ five speed, I manged 27.4 mpg. That wasn't all 56.6 mph on the motorways either. To break the boredum, occaisionally cranked it up to 70mph. Urban driving is tragically about 17mpg.
On a separate 100 mile run, overtook nothing, did 50 mph all the way and achieved 29.5mpg.

In the 11 years of the 2wd caravelle ownership and 6 years of the Syncro ownership, anything between 17 and 25 mpg has been the norm.. but generally I dont hang about and find it difficult to sit at 50... so generally dont... :rofl

A mixture of A roads and motorway at 55-60 and I can manage 19mpg with my 2.0l air cooled automatic high top half loaded. It´s pish poor but I can´t imagine anything over 20-21mpg being possible with this configuration.

Hate to say it but I'm a bit obsessive about fuel consumption and think the only way to accurately check it is to fill the tank/s right up, zero the trip oddometer, drive until the next fill up and do the same again ( I do this all the time anyway ) Also worth doing is to check that the speedo is accurate using a GPS ( mine is spot on )

Recently did Cornwall fully loaded 3 up, strong headwind plus hills with my 1.7 diesel hightop and got 36mpg over 600miles... Chuffed or what?!!!

I have just bought a 1.9 petrol Holdworth and £30 got me 150 miles so about 20p per mile and some times I would look down, and be doing 85 mph without even realising it.

I believe this would work out to be approximately 34 mpg??? :D Correct me if i'm wrong though. This was driving from Warwickshire to Cardiff ...

That thing attached to your ankle & what it's wearing can have a massive effect on mpg.

We have a 1.9inj wbx in a Westfalia & we get on average on a run doing 55/60mph with odd overtake at 70 'ish
& every time I've worked out our mpg it's always been around 27mpg. It's done about 169,000 miles with no service history worth mentioning.

I've just come back from my sisters wedding in Middlesbrough and got 22mpg over the full tankful, mostly at 55-60mph with a few blasts up to 75ish on the A66. Best i've had yet while running on LPG and works out about 15p/mile. :D
