help gearstick kits fitted still sloppy change

Post by jake1953 »

Hi technical gurus, I need some help please about my 5 speed gearbox.
Yesterday,I fitted the fork end repair kit (from silver bullet now available from Brickwerks) and noticed an improvement in the gearchange.
Today I fitted the kit from brickwerks for the bottom of the gearstick. Gearstick still has lots of sideplay (4" travel) and the gears don't seem as positive as yesterday. There were no instructions with the Brickwerks kit but I followed the Haynes manual to a tee.
Also, the gearstick has always been too far away from the driver and I hoped the kit would magically cure this. Oh well another 80 odd quid spent
for fun :(
Maybe the adjustments have to be done on the linkage?
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I think you may find that you need to do all the other linkage "onion" bushes. The one in the middle, the one on the gearbox and almost certainly replace the ball and cup on the very end too. Make sure all the rubber gaiters are OK and well lubed up!
It does go on a bit and adds up but it's the diference between something awful to drive and a satisfyingly precise change.
4" at the lever is a LOT...make sure the centre clamp isn't loose or the universal joint on the way out.

I'm about to remake the 5-speed lever guide wedges for the front end too. I'll put up a fresh post for them

Thanks silverbullet, Is the centre clamp you refer to the clamp holding the centre and rear shiftrods Together?
I can get all gears easily but the side play bothers me.

check to see that there isn't play in the hole where the centre UJ pivot pins go through, Corkyboys has a few mm of play there which means even though stick is moving enough some of that motion is lost before the gearbox end so difficult to engage all three pairs of gears easily, set up is a compromise
