Engine ID help please

I've been asked to help identify an engine, its a thornycroft marine engine but the new owner of the boat it is in was told by the previous owner that its a marinised version of some sort of volkswagen Motor.

Wonder if anyone has any idea what it might be.

Its a 4 cylinder turbo Diesel, belived to be 2lt

Cheers for that, I don't think its a vw motor its just what the previous owner had said.
