Aye and couple that with a hot engine reducing pressure even more. ..
But if the oil light didn't come on or the buzzer didn't go off then no damage ocurred.

accidentally over revved it to silly in 2nd (van was packed and the music was on loud so didn't notice I was in the wrong gear) and felt the engine die in power. Realising my mistake went to 3rd but the oil buzzer went off so I pulled over and saw the oil was a bit low

Classic tappet drained.. affecting the valve timing, hence the bogging noise on acceleration

Nope
oil change and a good run (1/2 an hour) should fill it up again and quieten down.
if it doesn't fill up and shut up... it's either shagged and will need replacing, or it needs adjusting.

Nice, thanks for that.
Been a while since it has had the oil and filter changed so due for one, I'll make sure its a quality VW spec filter as well.
Will get them done when its looked at next Saturday.

Had it checked out, one of the tappets was broken but further investigation showed there was top end failure on one of the pistons though it still drives.
He reckons that at 85K it just reached the end of its life, the longer they sit about the shorter their life as the oil drains out of key components. It was sitting on a drive for nearly 3 years before I was given it, just mechanical failure rather than lack of oil or anything. My mum owned it before, probably ran it with no oil for ages or something.
Getting another engine, will have it Friday which is great as I'm at Secret Garden Party and the thought of a tent was making me freak out.
Whats the deal with bedding it in? I was thinking of driving right round the M25 and back to the garage for inspection? 120 Motorway miles at 60mph?

Running in
Don't bother... just drive it sensibly and gently for a while, then with increasing pedal over first thousand or 2k miles
When you start it, do not rev it up for a good few seconds, just let it idle to pick up oil pressure and feed oil around engine. Then subsequently, don't leave it idling for long if possible,. Always, get the engine warm by actively driving it, so once its started and had a good few seconds to lubricate itself, drive it especially in cold weather
If you do need to warm it tio get it warmed or running smoothly, hold it at about 1800~2000 rpm steadily rather than revving. If it won't do that and sit there happily, then something is w rong, possibly the fuelling, temp sensors or choke mechanism
Change the oil and filter at 500 and then say 2000 miles. Always try to get the oil circulated and some pressure before re-starting
Again, don't boot an engine and rev it up stupidly immeditaely upon starting. If it' s been standing be gentle with it until its warmed up.
Running in is also about letting it get used to running at higher and higher temperatures unti it can stand full throttle for a few minutesd at a time, which with a compeltely new engine could take a thousand miles or more.
Change down earlier when running in, keep the revs reasonable and don't lug it, up hills or into winds.
Right foot and temperature gauge (as well as oil pressure and temperature gauges if exist) are your guide.

Thanks Harry, all you said was echoed by Tim at Kustom Dub Werks. I've had a new engine fitted, its a remtech from VW heritage which he recommended as he is most comfortable with their warranty arrangements.
New clutch as well. Carb needs a bit of a overhaul, but its OK for now, while I digest the 2 grand I just spent.
The old engine was on its way when I got it, to get as much out of it as I did I reckon was good going. I say this because this new one, and its dead shiny, sounds nothing like the old one ever did. Wow, its got a lovely soft vroom sound.
I shall youtube it when I get a moment.
