Electrics hum

Post by saviogimmi »

Hi everyone just finished putting my 85 west back together! I have found a strange problem, when I rum things off the leisure it is silent. I have done the fuse box mod to run the interior lights off the leisure batt too. But when hook up to 240v everything has a bad buzz tv lights stereo. I'm wondering if it's an earthing prob but not sure how to solve this. The strange thing is if I turn on the eber heater the buzz disappears!!! Any ideas as I've run out!!!!!

I'm not sure how the westy electrics work, but this sounds like a case of poor smoothing on the battery charger.
Your transformer steps down the voltage from 240v to 12v AC. there will then be a rectifier to convert to (lumpy) DC and a large (4,700microfarad?) capacitor to smooth the DC.
If either the rectifier or the Capacitor are faulty then you will get a poorly smoothed DC which will give noise on the TV.

Turning the heater on will draw a substantial current from the circuit, probably dropping the terminal voltage and masking the unsmoothed output.
You really need a scope to diagnose the problem propperly, but a good nose around the charger may reveal dodgy contacts or burnt out components.
