electric drill... attach it to the speedo cable at the wheel set it running and make a cup of tea.
stop it when you think it's correct
it's called "clocking"

Also ever so slightly illegal, If you don't know...better to have a written record of when the speedo was replaced and zero the "new" one as Kev has intimated

not so sure, attempting to deceive a buyer as to the vehicles true milage would be.Also ever so slightly illegal

I used to have a handy man for speedo's - calibrating and repair - he was a clockmaker also. Sadly he is dead now, but surely it would be easier to have it fixed rather than go through the hassle of sorting out another one?

Re: re-setting the mileage on a replacement speedo?
I have recently stripped mine down, reset it to zero and it works
It didn't work before and after stripping it down it made sense to set it to zero (just bought van and fitting 'new' motor). I just made a note of everything and with a bit of luck...

Re: re-setting the mileage on a replacement speedo?
That's why I suggested to make sure it's documented. I know we all like to make sure the numbers tally, but I'm sure that that have to be zeroed if exchanged, just like if you bought a new one over the counter or had it repaired.Hacksawbob wrote:not so sure, attempting to deceive a buyer as to the vehicles true milage would be.Also ever so slightly illegal
By way of a contrast: I found out that the "mileage" recorded on my mot's for the SA is actually kilometers, as the face had been swapped on the original speedo when it was imported! The last owner told me that it was reading a good 10% LOW by sat-nav, so got a good replacement with only a few more miles indicated and put that in. I'd like to find a km/h trip speedo go put the record straight but it's all a bit irrelevant really...still bugs me though!
Plus you're not supposed to drive about with a km/h speedo now, are you

Re: re-setting the mileage on a replacement speedo?
I'm pretty sure replacing a speedo and altering it's reading to match the original is perfectly legal. On the other hand, trying to decieve a potential buyer with a lower reading would of course be fraudulant because of it's higher value.
Fitting a new speedo is also perfectly legal, as long as you were not claiming a higher value.

Given the times we live in, for what it's worth etc etc... if you think that you're likely to ever sell it, keep a record of what you did and when. Sign, date, witness and put in the van's file. You're in the clear should anyone have a grumble in the future.

Re: re-setting the mileage on a replacement speedo?
hi,Thanks for all the replies, just to clafiy,i have a lowish mileage van, with some service history,im not trying to decieve any one, even if i was, it would get flaged up by the new rules on mots.Im just reluntact to change a 70k speedo to something like a 150k,i just want it to work and read the correct mileage,so it tallys up with the history.Il give that firm a try, thanks for the link!
