Blade fuses

Having just got my newly restored 1981 T25 camper to Glastonbury and back, I am feeling a bit smug but I did start to get problems with the fusebox. First the wipers then the indicators failed. The problem was always a poor connection in the fusebox. Is there a replacement fuse box which uses blade fuses instead of the ceramic ones on the market? If so where can I get one? I can't see it on eBay or JustKampers.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that unfortunately - the newer style fuse boxes cover different things entirely. I suppose you could reconstruct the loom and fit connectors so it would fit a newer style fuse box, but I reckon that would be quite a job.

If I were you I'd clean up the terminals with contact cleaner and some scrubbing, make sure the springs have a bit of life in them and try from there. The good thing is you've worked out where the electrical fault is - that's usually the hard bit!

Thanks, I will get busy with the emery cloth. I know later boxes won't work as there are too many circuits, I just wondered if some enterprising company had started making replacements that could just be slotted into the existing space.

I don't know of any particular inherrant issues with these old type fuse boxes, faults can normally be sorted with a re-tension and clean on the contact springs.
However, I would add a couple of things:

Cheap fuses are plastic and can melt so ditch these and replace them with proper ceramic ones.
Have a good look at the earthing crowns above the fuse box. These can be the root of a lot of electrical issues on these vehicles....look for corrosion.

That was helpful. I think I will overhaul the box rather than try a bodged replacement which will probably cause more problems than it solves

What I did was fit an extra fuse box behind glove box that takes spade fuses. Gradually I've been transferring all the piggy-backed ones (the result of pointless and numerous retro-fitted gadgets) so they're all on their own fuse. I also put blower motor on its own fuse rather than ( as with most pre-85 vans) sharing the wiper motor fuse - a bad design flaw.

Thanks that may work if I can stretch the cables that far. I'll see if I get any more problems when I fix the existing box. I fitted an auxilary box behind the passenger seat running off the lesiure battery which runs the stereo, interior lights and 12v sockets so I only have the original wiring running through the old box.
