wonky mixture ??

Post by Tony Tone »

Here's what happens....

1.9 D.G - In 3rd gear accelerating, and before I reach the top of the rev range ( not that I push it to the top but I kno theres more to go) it coughs and stops accelerating very abruptly. I have to change up quickly to 4th to keep picking up speed.

Runs very well all the rest of the time. Does this sound like a weak mixture ?

What revs are you hitting in 3rd when it happens?

Theres a rev limiter rotor arm fitted to my 1.9DG engined caravelle which does the same as 5400rpm is hit.

Really !!!!, is that a standard fitment rotor or an optional extra. I'm not sure what the revs are as no rev counter. To make it worse I havent had a petrol engined car/van in years so cant remeber how theyre supposed to perform lol

Standard fit as there is no Tacho on the engine so you'll never over rev it.

With respect  it sounds like it's a good job it has one otherwise this could be a different conversation altogether.

Its a bit of a scare the first time it cuts in as you're overtaking a line of trucks uphill and can suddenly see headlights coming the other way.

IIRC there are two versions of the damn rev limited rotor, a 5600k and a lower one, but i cant remember the lower value, but its too low!

most peoples ears and sense of what's ok will cop out at 4000rpm anyway
DG specific one is 5400 but there may be other VW ones that will fit
if you want to have no limiter then fit the DJ one, but that's best with a rev counter to confirm what your senses are telling you
because they have a mechanical element they can go wrong and give a faultering performance before 5400 when they are tired

Stock 70s beetle rotor fits but if you really are redlining it, buy another rev limiter type :?

That said, could be that the hidden fuel filter (tucked away inside brass carb inlet pipe) is clogged, starving engine of fuel at full throttle. Check that out too.
