new fuel pump not working

Post by amoore77uk »

hi

i have just replaced my original fuel pump with a very nice looking one from the boys at brickwerks

however i just tried to tuned my van over and it is not drawing in petrol:

the fuel hoses are new and i can suck petrol through them hoses and through the pump. also i have double checked the house are connected properly to the in and out pipes

so i was wondering what could i have done wrong

what i am thinking is:

am i suppose to grease the moving parts on the base of the pump-

and presume that ones was a spare should i have used both

any help would be awesome

cheers darren :ok

its not that then, the mechanical fuel pumps have a 100mm push rod that opperates the pump thought it could be that

hi kev - good to hear from you, hope your well....

AA guys advice - van broke down due to blocked carburettor, - when he came out - he advised me to also change the fuel pump and fuel lines. He also told me to put in an extra filter between pump and carb to stop it blocking up again.

i have taken the extra filter off for now as i was concerned it might be the source of the problem.

the fuel lines i put on are 8mm i think the original was 6mm - could this be the problem

i know my pump is not suitable for fuel injection (i not know what is meant by fuel injection) - but i was told that this particular pump was fine for my 1988 van.

VERY poor advice. the filter straight after the tank is more than sufficient. If the carb blocked then it was either that filter that had decayed away or the fuel lines themselves. Replace the hoses by all means, check the tiny mesh filter inside the feed pipe into the carb. Measure the push rod below the fuel pump, it should be 100mm as has been said.

hi Ian

just checked haynes manual and now know what you mean by the push rod

i was confused by first reply as the only pushrods that i was aware of was the ones that fit onto the engine

checked length and its o.k 99-100 mm

after reading haynes manual i discovered that i was also supposed to pack rubber block with grease which i have now done

.... however after spending the week end obsessing over van .... i have a very frustrated girlfriend that insists that i take her out before i go near my van again.. GIRLFRIENDS and VANs so difficult to get the balance right

anyway hopefully plenty of grease will sort it ...will find out later when i try to set up carb
cheers for advice :ok
