Flashing light?
1.9 petrol water cooled, suddenly developed a loud rattling sound when idling, the little light behind the temperature gauge is flashing when idling. Am I right to suspect water pump?

^^^WHS^^^
Defo check it out. I drove to Aberystwyth and back same day, no probs. Noticed a rattle from back of engine the following morning. drove to work and pump spewed water over the carpark.
Pump changed, rattle gone and no leak.

Re: Flashing light?
Haynes manual gives replacing water pump a three spanners rating, probably a garage job then as I'm a complete novice!

Re: Flashing light?
If it's a late (84/5 onwards) it's about an hour's job including coffee BUT as with all things if it's not been undone within the past 2 or 3 years then things can turn ugly VERY quickly ... be prepared to pay for 2 hours labour.

Thanks I've had a look and I'm going to give it a go, if I get the a*se in the air should that remove the need to bleed the radiator?

Re: Flashing light?
It should simply top up (with the coolant you very cleverly saved plus a bit you've lost) and just bleed up the tail end and the bleed ring by opening the bleed valve on the top of the t/stat housing and keeping the header tank brimmed while reving up to a constant 2,000 rpm. Instructions are in the wiki
