CRISIS! Hols tomorrow - speedo bust!

Post by LL435 »

Hi,
T25 Westfalia with 1.9 AAZ replacement Seat engine.
We are off to France tomorrow and on the way into work this morning the speedo stopped working!!
I'm imagining speeding fines in France ?!? (if I can go fast enough)
Has anybody got any hot tips for a quick fix or is a big job that will have to wait until we get back?
I could always drive to the rev counter I guess.

Check the cable hasn't come off the head unit or at the other end or that the cable itself hasn't broken.

Failing that, it looks like the rev.counter is going to have to replace it until you can get a new speedo-head

Doug.

The one in my syncro has never worked. Just use your sat nav.

Thanks guys.
Yes Sat Nav is an option.

Nearside front Hub cap is off & hub cover off. Cable with square head is loose not captive and can pull through the hole a little.
There should be something holding it in there somehow??

There should be a square hole in the grease cap.The inner speedo cable has a square end to fit into it and has a small clip to hold it in place that turns with the wheel. There is a thread on the forum that shows a picture of a method that holds a damaged square end and cable in the grease cap carnt find it.Find a way to hold the cable with the hole in the grease cap so that it turns with the wheel .I lost the small clip on the speedo square end that keeps it in place through the grease cap i used some turns of copper wire to hold it in place.

Thanks to all.
I sorted it whilst the messages were coming in with a paperclip for now. Took it for a spin & works fine.
Realised there was a hole in the hub cap I'd put behind me on the floor!

Might do an oil change but tempted to leave it til I get back in case there's snags!

France tomorrow :ok
Tour de France & etape ride in the Alps here we come !!
