hi folks
I have been using your excellent forum for a while now so it's time i got involved :)
i'm having some issues with a twin carb setup on a 2.0l Aircooled CU engine it's in a 1980 camper

the first problem was the engine was losing power when i tried to accelerate felt like the van was being dragged back
so i took the van to a vw specialist.The engine and carbs were stock, anyway they called to say the carbs were knackered
and i needed new ones so being a Aircooled novice i just agreed and this is what i got back

now firstly these are supposed to be new carbs.Are they? pdsi2 pdsi3?
they sourced the carbs from a vw dealer (not gonna name)who i paid directly
£490 :shock: but i went along with it trusting both parties. Is it a fair price?NOT INCLUDING FITTING
they sent me a reciept with everything listed apart from the carbs where it just said misc £490. this seemed odd!

The van ran better for a bit then started playing up again so i took it to a rollin road (should have done in the first place)
they re-jetted the carbs and it was running nice but lately it's not so good :(
there is lots of popping from the righthand carb when it revs the linkage seems not to work so well and the plugs have loads of carbon
on them. any ideas?
also the black rubber breather pipe has been stuffed through the back of the engine bay and is puffing out white smoke is this normal?

i'm gonna go back to the garage but after a bit of research i have the feelin i've been ripped off so i thought i'd see what people think
before i start complaining

Can't help with the carb and cost questions but someone will be along with an answer shortly.

The black rubber pipe that's been stuffed out the back of the engine bay is the crankcase breather. It's job is to vent pressure from the crankcase and this will normally include a small amount oil vapour. It should be connected to the air-box which you haven't got anymore, so you wouldn't normally see what comes out of it. When I've been tuning my van and running it with the breather disconnected I don't get any white smoke though.

The other thing I noticed is there's a fuel filter in the engine bay. :shock: This is a fire risk and an additional restriction to the fuel flow into the carbs.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

your right hand carb air filter should have a pipe as above that the breather is fitted to, did you get your old carbs back? they look like chinese empi copies and are not great, your old carbs could have been rebuilt but you dont say what was wrong with them try and get them back in volksworld or camper there was a how to rebuild carbs in the last couple of months, there are specailists who rebuild and rejet a google search will bring up one close to you
