petrol or diesel

Good evening all,

I have a question I need pondering. We have a new family member joining us shortly, in the daughter's ownership - Eric the panel van. Right, Eric currently has no engine and no gearbox. He was brought into the garage for a petrol to diesel change, the owner got some of the way through the work, and then ran out of dosh. To cover the work done (removal of engine, sourcing of diesel parts etc) the garage kept the van. We have now purchased it. Interestingly, its registration number is only a couple of numbers off my van!! So they were probably in a dealership together somewhere.....

anyway, I digress. i was just going to source the 1.9 stuff and drop it back in. But would it be better to go diesel/ Know nothing about diesel engines...other than that they are better on economy. What do we put in - the 1y that folks talk about?

The rad is still there, as is the fuel tank. much of the water pipe system is gone.

so, discuss please. What would folk do? Thinking also that if the diesel goes, replacing with a new diesel is going to be easier than finding a replacement 1.9 dg?

Sounds like you can go either way, I'd say unless your going to gas it go diesel. 1Y is more wires and loom type stuff fly by wire accelerator more economical but more involved install might be marks cup of tea with his electricery skills. AAZ is easiest if you can get a goodun. But a good JX still attached to its gear box is going to be easier still.

A 1Y engine has a lucas or bosch injection pump mechanical & not fly by wire as said .Its an easy install requiring 1.6n engine parts such as angled sump and inlet&exhaust manifold the wiring can be made simple for glow plug start.If i had the choice i would fit a VW petrol 2ltr 2E engine this requires a ECU & wiring its mechanicaly throttle pedal oparated and revs okay with a WBX T25 gearbox.The engine is cheap and easy to obtain but requires a diesel angled sump & bell housing and engine bars&mounts.An exhaust down pipe to silencer needs to be made up.Bonus is 116 BHP available and LPG conversion .1Y No 1896 (1.9l) Golf/Vento/Passat 64 hp @ 4400 rpm SDi, Fly by wire.
ECU etc. needed. (No a ECU is not needed and no fly by wire)

^^^^^^^^^^^i was gonna suggest this too as its been done and proven to deliver around 30 mpg.. why i asked what parts Em had as it was going to be converted to diesel and you need these parts for the 2e engine

Sorry folks, been a bit busy.

right...I haven't bought any parts yet for anything. Garage did though, so may ring them later.

Sorry for the inept questions...I think I am a bit clearer now. SO the JX and gearbox is the easiest - Is this literally a straight drop in with some wiring differences...gonna need a glow plug circuit I guess? Do I need a new dash, or can we "modify" what we got?

Best I shove a wanted ad up, and go and read about JX engines.....whatever they might be!

Many thanks for the tips. I am trying to "future proof" it a bit, reading tech seems to be more diesel engines from later models that fit than petrols without alot of work.

Going to chicken out of diesel, and stay petrol! Since posting, found a couple of engine gear box set-ups for under £500.

Can I jump in here too as I find this interesting. My bus was a jx but is now 1.y . Am I right in thinking I can go petrol quite easyily having the jx gear box and sump? Just a thought for when my engines shot would mind more horses 100 bhp plus sounds good especialy if im only loosing 5 mpg?

Yes you can fit a petrol 2E engine it require the diesel bell housing angled sump and oil pump pick up /spigot bearing .The exhaust down pipe needs making up to fit from the manifold to silencer.And a ECU and wiring but as said its mechanical for the throttle which uses cable not fly by wire.It can give 116 BHP for a 2ltr engine.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ENGINE-VW-GOLF-GT ... 27b48ef987" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Good but needs the engine to be complete.

Sorry if this "muddies the water " but if I had this situation I would fit an inline 4 injection engine out of a Scirocco, Golf or Passat (Passat ones being cheaper at the breakers although they are the same !! = around £100 I reckon) onto the Diesel cross member (etc) = a reliable engine that is easy to get parts for and has a bit more power and MPG

Not that I hate the WBX engine ( I have one ! ) but it is prone to various "issues" (water seal leaks being the most common and pretty serious hassle)
