Nervous newbie

Hello, First of all I'd just like to say how brilliant this site is. There's nothing you guys don't know is there? Secondly I would like to appologise as we are not yet van owners, We are waiting untill January for finances to be sorted. My problem is with the budget we've got, We have to accept that there's going to be some work involved. Which is fine, We'd prefer that to be honest, but. I'm very nervous about chassis problems. How bad does a chassis have to be before its a no go van or can the worst be saved?
We have seen a couple of vans on auction sites, but have shyed away as they needed 'Chassis work for M.O.T' The family and I are so excited about our new family member ( the wife is bound to name the van ) we just need to buy with a little confidence and with a bit of knowlege?

Any advice would be greatly recieved. Also I'd like to appologise if I've posted this in the wrong forum, not that good with the ole techie tinternet thingy

I'd shy away from that stuff too..
Chassis rarely cause problems IMHO and after '86 VW galvanised them at the factory.


The panels that cover the van are the issue really, some folks get the two mixed up.

As to the budget, (now dont start laughing) We have around 2-3k, I know this is a long stretch, like I say we dont mind doing a bit of work, well a lot maybe . we've accepted that. Do you think this is possible? I've seen some around the £1500 and they seem remarkabe for that money!I'm selling almost everything I own too try and get the most money we can, Im even selling my own van...and i'm a self employed painter! do you do wheel barrows aswell? .
I suppose on the side of reason its better to buy a better condition van than spend money doing one up?

The best advice I could give is don't buy a rusty one thinkung youcan easily sort it out unless youcan weld in new panels or are willing to pay someone else to do it for you.

Also be wary of the "quick blow over vans that have just been patched and a quick coat of apint applied.....the best ones are to be had from enthusiasts, younever get back what you spend on them and everyone on here knows that and accept it......unless youcan weld and respray for youself. Rusty doors can be replaced and interiors refurbed quite easily too but a little rust on the panels often hide major work.

If you do buy a camper with rust, be prepared to commit a lot of time to fixing it up. If you have a family and kids it can be hectic, but at the same time rewarding that you are fighting the cheap and easy throw away waste culture that we have right now.

What about buying vans that have good bodys but have blown engines or similer problems, is that a possibility cost wise?
I must appologise for being a pain, Its just great having all this free advice. Worth £££££££££'s

free advice????????????????? er no you will pay sometime down the line spend the next few months reading up and going through all the relevant posts on here esp'ref what goes wrong, there is a very short section somewhere about what doesnt go wrong but I cant or havent the time left to search for it.
