Maybe the switch is upside down?
or the connections are wrongly placed

noo I am no expert when it comes to electrics but most people have said clean the earth crowns they are located behind the fuse box they do seem critical to the functioning of the electrics.

Hello,
earths are always good to clean up - as is the 14-pin connector to the dash pod, but I'm with Kev on this one - I'd check the wiring from your light switch - are you sure the ignition live and light signal have not been swapped over somehow? That would explain some of the symptoms you describe... If you go here

you can find some electrics diagrams which will help check the wiring - particularly I'd check the colours of the wires coming from your light switch
Good luck sorting it
