Yes don't get too fussy - just knock the worst of any orange peel away. Providing you haven't made a total pigs ear of the mix, subsequent layers will look better. Look around you. If you look at modern car finishes, its not baby smooth anymore and many even straight off assembly lines have a degree of orange peel and few if any are perfect. Its what the buyer will accept at a distance. Just remove the worst of it without going right back to smooth and then apply another coat. It'll be fine.

In the past I had a pro (cheapish) full respray that was Orange peel, after a few polishes in subsequent weeks it looked great. Obviously with rollering its not going to look as good as a £3k+ pro job.
I can't wait to get rollering on mine.

I am going order now my paint! RAL 5012 (similiar to LH5G) and i was thinking probably using white for the roof and well, black for the bumpers.

How does this numbers look?

-2.5L RAL 5012 for the whole van exept the roof
-0,75 L for the roof?
-0,25 L bumpers?

They said 2.5 L should make the whole van but is better to order a bit extra. So if i paint the roof in white, how much I need then? And for the bumpers?

I can get cans of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 2.5 liters...

I used about 3l for the van body and about 0.5l for the roof

Folkers - how many coats is that? I put my second coat on today and thinned it a bit more, maybe as much as 25% white spirit and it has dried much better this time around. Less orange peel. I think when I flat it back this time, I may use a finer grade than 600 grit so I don't take as much paint off so quickly!

I did 4 coats of paint all over flatting down with 600 grit between coats then 1000 grit before the final coat. When I started I thinned the paint too much. At a guess I'd say on the last coat I used about 15% White spirit

15% is about right but as you've no doubt discovered, its not an exact science. You just get a feel for it. 2.5ltrs will certainly do the body (just) but I ordered 2.5ltr x 2 to have enough for roof (which I still haven't decided on yet). Yes you can paint hightops with it. Rustoleum can be painted on metal, wood and fibreglass. Also great for aluminium garage doors. I think technically, just over 3ltrs is whats needed for a repaint although it really depends on what colour you're painting over.

Folkers - bet you're pleased Its not a £2k spray job but it CAN be if you work hard on the finishing Once you put all the fixings, grill etc back on, it'll really come together and at least you can drive it between stages.

Decided that when I paint it next, I'll use same blue for top half and a kind of Tardis blue for bottom half. - oh and WAY more chrome.....

reading back on thread, it seems you have not had to leave too long between coats, how long did you leave after initially painting before colour sanding for coat 2, 3 ,4 etc i was planning on leaving 4 weeks between coats but would prefer to leave less time if possible. first coat is going on sat morning or this thursday evening if mate has finished tidying a weld on lower sill.

Personally I left 1-2wks for paint to harden properly between coats
