Diesel takes ages to start - fuel leak?

Completely frustrated with this.

The T25 (AAZ) is struggling to start - it seems like fuel is leaking out the pump back down the line - and every time its been stood for a bit i have to crank over the engine loads to get it to start. When it does start there isnt loads of smoke - it just behaves as normal. This indicates to me that it starts as soon as fuel gets in.

I've checked the glow plugs - fine (and still a pain in the ass) and the fuse and relay are spot on.

Recently, i had to get a mechanic to drop the tank to change the brake lines - i have heard that the tricky bit is putting back on the breathers. Bearing in mind he was doing the job on his own on my drive with the van on axle stands - there maybe a possibility that he hasnt put the breathers on?

If this is the case, will this cause fuel to leak back up the pipes?

I had this issue before and the culprit was the fuel filter (plastic return bit had a hairline crack in it) and ive since replaced the fuel filter with a single one.

Appreciate any pointers or suggestions. Tomorrow im going to change all the fuel pipes in the engine bay and see if that works...

i'm sure i read a thread somewhere that some people fit a non return valve on diesels, for that very fault

Never even occured to me - genius!

Lets hope they are easy to buy - any ideas?

I was going to suggest a non return valve as well, I got mine made up at a fuel injector specialist for £20 with enough transparent pipe (so you can see if any air is there) to go from pump to filter, never had the problem again.

Commonly caused by the t valve on the filter. I hate them. Currently running a old used filter and valve on my t4 as the new filter and new t valve will not seal. Grrrrrrrr.

I fitted a non return valve, and a hand primer off a pug 306 just for ease of bleeding.

I never had any trouble

Thanks for the help guys - i spotted a leak on one of the injector return lines so i changed that (and fitted a non return valve) and the problem went.

That will be my last plea for help on the T25 because it has gone to its new owner now.

No doubt i'll have the same issue on the LT at some point when the full service history bit starts running out
