Snapped head stud on 1.9 WBX

Post by Sh!tbucket »

Following on from yesterdays thread about fitting a decoke set, I took the plunge, cleaned the head, piston crowns etc, etc, and fitted the Decoke set.

I managed to re-assemble all the components, push rod tubes in, lowered the head onto the barrels and tightened the bolts to 10Nm (1.02kgm).

On tightening to the second stage number (50Nm or 5.1Kgm) number one head stud sheared completely off at the base of the head thread.
I think it's my torque wrench which is a bit iffy, I could tell something wasn't quite right just before it went.

So, what do I do now?

The head bolts were in good condition and I'm gonna blame my tools.

Do I have to seperate the crankcase to change the studs or can I unscrew them and just replace as necessary?

Cheers.

You can replace the studs
Available from VW or VW Heritage or GSF
Take the head off and remove the stud

You could do the lot... not cheap though :D

Thanks Kev.

I only plan to do the snapped one and perhaps one other that's been looking at me wrong.

I don't suppose you have the pn's for the studs at GSF, I can't find owt on their new website.

Ta, Danny.

I've obtained some head studs, a 176mm for the one I snapped and a 222mm for one I didn't like the look of.

The dodgy ones are removed, came out no problems (although I've have to break the base barrel seal, which I'd rather not have done).

So, how do I fit the news ones?

Do I just screw them in and torque them up to some figure?

Do I need to put some thread lock on them?

Any help would be appreciated chaps.
