Engine number/size

Post by FunkyDuck »

The V5 for my 1980 T25 states the engine size it 18000cc. Which is wrong obviously. I know the engine number which starts AN, but not sure how i can find the engine size from the engine number? Can anyone advise?

Golf 1997 - 2000 1.8 ANN
Golf 1997 - 2001 1.8 ANP
Golf Cabrio 1995 - 2003 1.8 ANP
Golf Cabrio 1997 - 2003 1.8 ANN
and so on.
from here

Why are you so sure that it isn't a 1.8 engine?

Log book says 18000cc which is 18.0ltr engine..! They've found an extra zero somewhere.

Engine is air-cooled so cant be amy of the above, it looks like it may come from an early 70s vw type 4... god knows how that got in there!

There was a 1.8 air cooled engine.
The industrial air cooled 1.8 engine was discontinued in 1991 but I don't know what engine code was used on it.

Thanks guys! Yes i realised it was likely to be a 1.8 but my logbook says it is 18ltr. I have to jump through hoops to get DVLA to change the engine size from 18000cc to 1800cc!

Is is a good robust engine? It has 95k on the clock. So this engine has been fitted as an afterthought and isn't original?

when you said 18000 I thought that was a typo, didn't realize you meant it really was 18000
on the log book. Whats your insurance like? :rofl
Your engine will most likely be original (modified by VW )

"While the Type 4 was discontinued in 1974 when sales dropped, its engine became the power plant for Volkswagen Type 2s produced from 1972 to 1979: it continued in modified form in the later Vanagon which was air-cooled from 1980 until mid-1983."
1.7, 1.8, and 2.0

Info seems to contradict itself, says on wiki that it the type 4 engine was used, but the original spec for the T25 says 1.6 or 2ltr, so how would you have actually purchased a 1.8? Some kind of special edition? Mine was first registered 4th feb 1980 so is a very early model.

Whats the actual engine number on the case?

T25's NEVER came with a 1.8L Aircooled type 4.. only 2L..
1.6L is a type 1 based engine..

AN006458

Have looked into it a bit today, and apparently you could get a 1.8 but they had to be imported specially? It looks like it is a VW variant 412 engine modified to go in the back of a camper, and were used in the T2 also.

WOuld really like to get more info about it tho.
