Big lumps of metals and spanners.

Fitting a Decoke kit to a 1.9 DG WBX queries.

Post by Sh!tbucket »

Hi all, this is my first post to this forum, I'm new to T25's and the waterboxer.

To cut a long story short, I've bought a T25 Autosleeper to use whilst I'm 'doing up' my 1977 Bay. I bought the van cheap because the left head water jacket seal had split and popped out and it wouldn't hold coolant. The Engine, a recon unit, was fitted three years ago by the previous owner and then never turned a wheel since. I decided to just buy and fit and single side De-Coke Kit to address the problem since the engine is essentially an unused recon (so shouldn't have alot wrong with it  ).

I bought a Victor Reinz kit from VW Heritage. The kit seems to have a load of gaskets I don't need, as well a not having some I do (thermostat housing to pump). It doesn't come with any instructions either as to what's for what in there. It has a tube of 300deg sealant for the water jacket seal and another tube of yellow stuff which doesn't say what it is.

My questions are:
1. What's the yellow stuff in the unmarked tube? Is it for sealing the head bolts, and
2. If it's not for sealing the head bolts what do I seal the head bolts with?
3. As well as a 2mm bead of sealant around the water jacket seal, do I put any around the green seal on the barrels to help seal there (it had it there when I removed the head, it even had it around the metal head gasket too!)?
4. I haven't disturbed the liner seal in the bottom of the crankcase, should I change these any way, they're in the kit?
5. Do any of you have any other advice to somebody who is a waterboxer virgin?

I've looked in the rather poor (compared to the older workshop manuals) Haynes Transporter Service & Repair manual and I've also looked at the VW PDF on here for cylinder head work which refers to 'AMV 188 100 02' for sealing the head bolts.

So far I've had no nasty surprises apart from discovering the thermostat housing didn't have a thermostat in it and that the recon work isn't a nicely done as I'd have liked.

Any help would be much appreciated folks,

Cheers, Dan.
