Rear brake drums wont come off

Post by project25 »

Hi, Im having great difficulty removing both rear brake drums.
I have slackened off the shoes, slackened off the hand brake cable, soaked the studs and small bolt holes with releasing fluid and even tried some heat. I have movement in all these places but cannot budge the drums where the hub nut comes through. I am using two large screwdrivers as levers. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Yes, once you are sure that the shoes are backed off by unclicking the star adjusters i get a large mallet of rubber or wood and bash it on the side as you turn it so that you give it a whack on all sides....then i try to hit the edges from the rear until it comes loose.

you have undone the wee 10 mm nuts right? then go at it with a lump hammer left right top bottom .. repeat until free, (mind the wheel arch!) the drums may be lipped and this usually encourages them off.

Hi thanks for advice, they were well rusted on, (due to being idle for 7 years) The answer is a cheap dent puller kit I bought some years ago. It is basiclly a slide hammer with different attachments for the end. One being a 90o bend that fitted beautifully between drum and back plate. Then it was just a case of sliding the heavy weight and rotating the drum.It came off with quite a bang.
I shall be applying a smear of copper grease on assembly . Also new shoes and slave cylinders. Lets hope I dont get dangerous brake fade when on the road. (ref. something I red on here!)

too late now i know, but often its the centre hole that also corrodes , behind the 46mm hub nut.
