so hypothetically if an Aircooled enjun had been doing nowt for 6 years, what would i need to do before trying to turn it over??

personally Dave i would take the air box off too make sure that there aren't any lodgers ,
put a v. good battery on it
by pass the petrol tank , use a plastic gallon tank , then you'll know that the petrol is good
take the plugs out ,check the oil , turn it over without the plugs in to get the oil flowing about abit , check that the plugs have a good spark , refit the plug and crank it over , if it fires up turn it off asap, if it dont then check the petrol is get through , if the petrol isn't getting there then the pump could be frelled or bunged up /carbs buggered etc ...

Does it turn smoothly with no notches, clicks or any other untoward noises, sounds or feelings back through the crank pulley?

just to make sure eveything such as valves are clear - have trashed Aircooled enge before turning it over when it had dropped a valve on Cylinder 3.

This this was Mark's rationale for a quick turnover and off - see if it spins up but not running it long enough to do any damage.

Would also compression test each cylinder esp 3.

cheers, i know it was running fine before it was left to stand still in a garrage, is it likely to have contracted any damage doing nowt???

Sorry for delay in responding - sausages under the grill (obvously not in my westy

)

Ran through this procedure with an old VW fan for both my B Buggy and Bay as they had both been standing for ages.

I would heed Mark's advice re things to do, but also would completely fettle the ignition system - plugs out clean, dizzy to bits and clean points cap etc.

once all shiney - put one plug into each lead at a time and check for spark.

Follow Marks advice re petrol from a sperate source - all kinds of CARP builds up in the tank - may be a good idea to flush this through a couple of times and fit an inline filter before using in anger.

What is the vehicule in question?

if it does start up , then you know its a runner , like blurb says you wouldnt want to damage a running engine , thing is if its a good un then you dont mind spenting a little ££ on a full service.

what you found anyway ?

going to collect it on saturday, full service was on the card but i wasn't sure if there was anything else i should do! i'll let you know how i get on next week!!

i've got one of them.
this had sat for 3 years,
new battery and away it went.
