Replacing Knackered Tyre

Post by Mick & Tracey »

Wrecked a tyre (BFG M/T) at the weekend and now wondering what's best to do.
Have read that all tyres have to be evenly matched.
Given that my remaining 4 tyres are part worn, how do I get around having one (new) tyre with bigger diameter? Sure, I can just use new one for spare, but if another tyre goes, I'd need to replace three and then keep part worn as spare, gambling that the new three will still be same pattern.
Alternative is to find a part worn?
Is this really what VW intended us to do or am I missing something?

About £10/15 tyre.

Good points. I've got about 11mm left on three and 6mm on the fourth (my old spare).

Did think about shaving a new one - only local company I found was Demon Tweeks and I thought I'd look a dick turning up asking them to butcher a £120 new off road tyre in the company of racers looking to super slick their tyres!!

I cant remember what the thread depth is on a new MT but 15mm seems to come to mind. If that is correct I'd reckon on two new ones and put them on the front as - I think - the tyres wear quicker so it will balance out the diameters.

Cue the 2mm difference brigade ......

15mm is right for a new AT MT's are probably about the same WHS run them on the front and maybe drop the prop just refit it when doing a big off road session

Nope, you are out of sync here. Its spare wheel holder time, then gearbox oil time and then decouplers ......

Thanks for suggestions. Two new ones sounds sensible.

I'll have to justify the expense in the proud knowledge that I'll be doing my bit to support tyre manufacturing and my local tyre dealer. Plus I wrecked the tyre when trying to keep a local green lane open which gives jobs for our local highways department. Add the now essential decoupler purchase and a new start up business for someone making bespoke spare wheel holders for holding complete sets of road tyres and mud tyres in assorted tread depths. God bless syncro owners for solving the the global recession - perhaps we should receive charitable status.

Of course I won't bother replacing the gearbox oil - that's clearly an urban myth. Best not to have any - that way you don't kill the little fishes in a mountain stream if the gearbox casing cracks.

My wife came up with another suggestion which was to stop pissing about and put the road tyres back on. I calmly told her that syncro tyres are like shoes......
